FAQ

Camino de Santiago FAQ

Planning your Camino comes with many questions — from the best time to walk to what you should pack
and whether you need to book accommodation.
Below you’ll find clear, practical answers to the most common questions asked by first-time pilgrims.

1. What is the Camino de Santiago?

The Camino de Santiago is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes across Spain and Portugal,
all leading to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of St James are traditionally believed to rest.

2. Which Camino route should I choose?

It depends on how long you want to walk, what scenery you prefer and how social you want your experience to be.
The most popular routes are the Camino Francés, Camino Portugués (Central or Coastal), Camino del Norte,
Camino Primitivo and Camino Inglés.

3. How many days do I need?

Most pilgrims walk between 5 and 35 days depending on the route.
Shorter options like the Camino Inglés take about a week, while the full Camino Francés takes about a month.

4. How far do people walk per day?

The typical daily distance is 18–25 km.
Beginners often start closer to 15–20 km and gradually increase.

5. When is the best time of year to walk?

The best months for most pilgrims are April–June and September–October.
Summer is busy and hot; winter is quiet with shorter days and limited services.

6. Do I need to be very fit?

Not necessarily. You don’t need to be an athlete, but some basic preparation makes the experience
much more enjoyable. Try walking 3–4 times a week for 6–8 weeks before your Camino.

7. How much does the Camino cost?

Most pilgrims spend €30–€60 per day on accommodation, food and small extras.
Your total budget depends on how long you walk and how comfortable you want to be.

8. What is the Compostela certificate?

The Compostela is the official pilgrim certificate issued in Santiago.
To receive it, you must walk at least 100 km or cycle 200 km
and collect stamps (sellos) in your pilgrim passport.

9. Do I need to book accommodation in advance?

Not always. On many routes you can simply walk and find a bed.
However, in high season or on popular stages, booking private albergues or hostels
a day or two ahead can help avoid stress.
Many pilgrims book the first and last nights in advance and leave the rest open.

10. Is the Camino safe?

Yes, the Camino is generally very safe, even for solo travellers.
Basic precautions — like walking during daylight, protecting valuables and informing someone of your plans —
are recommended.

11. Do I need special hiking gear?

No. The Camino is accessible to most people.
The essentials are comfortable shoes, a well-fitted backpack, quick-drying clothing and basic rain protection.
Most gear can be purchased or replaced along the way.

12. How heavy should my backpack be?

Aim for 7–10 kg including water.
The lighter your pack, the easier and more enjoyable your Camino will be.

13. Can I send my backpack ahead?

Yes. Luggage transport services operate on most major routes.
They usually cost €5–€7 per stage and carry your bag to your next accommodation.

14. What is the pilgrim passport (credencial)?

The “credencial” is a small booklet where you collect stamps at albergues, churches and cafés.
It proves you walked the route and is required to stay in public albergues and to receive the Compostela.

15. How do I get to my starting point?

Most pilgrims fly into major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Porto or Santiago
and continue by train or bus to their chosen starting point.
Popular starting towns like Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Porto and Sarria are well connected.

16. How do I navigate the Camino?

The Caminos are marked with yellow arrows, scallop shells and local signs.
Navigation is very easy — most pilgrims walk with no map.
Offline maps on your phone can still be helpful.

17. Can I walk the Camino alone?

Absolutely. Many pilgrims walk solo. The Camino is social, safe and full of people from all over the world.
You will rarely feel alone unless you choose to.

18. Can I walk the Camino with children?

Yes. Many families walk shorter routes together.
Choose manageable distances, lighter stages and comfortable accommodation.

19. What is the weather like?

Weather varies by region and season:
northern Spain is cooler and wetter, while central areas can be hot and dry in summer.
Always check the forecast and pack lightweight layers.
